A handyman invoice is a list of small jobs
Itemize each task. One line reading "labor, 4 hours" makes the client wonder where the time went. Five lines showing the TV, the drywall and the door they forgot to mention show a day's work they can see.
- The minimum charge on its own line. It covers the drive and setup, and showing it plainly stops the "but it only took ten minutes" conversation.
- Materials with receipts. Attach them or offer them. It is the easiest trust you will ever earn.
- How you want to be paid, written on the invoice, not just said at the door.
Know your state's dollar limit
Many states set a dollar amount above which the work needs a contractor license. In California the limit is $1,000 per job, labor and materials together, and the CSLB is clear that splitting one job into smaller invoices to stay under it is not allowed. Check your state's limit before quoting bigger work, and keep invoices that show the real scope.
Questions handymen ask
Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?
Both work. Price known tasks flat (mount a TV, hang a door) and open-ended work by the hour. Many handymen add a one-hour minimum to cover travel.
Do I need to give a receipt as well as an invoice?
If the client pays on the spot, mark the invoice paid with the date and method and send that. It works as the receipt.
