What this invoice generator does
Fill in your business details, the client's details, and the work you did as line items. The total, including tax, works itself out as you type. When it looks right, download it as a PDF and send it however you send invoices today: email, text, or in person. There is no account, and nothing you type is uploaded, it stays in this browser until you download it.
What to put on a trade invoice
- Your business details. Name, and enough contact information for a client to pay you or reach you with a question.
- An invoice number. Sequential and unique, so you and your bookkeeping never have two invoices with the same number.
- The client's name and address. Who is being billed, in writing.
- Itemized work. Materials and labour listed separately, not lumped into one line. It is what most disputes over an invoice come down to.
- Tax, shown separately. The rate and the amount, not folded silently into the total.
- Payment terms. When it is due, and how you want to be paid.
Common invoicing mistakes
- Reusing or skipping invoice numbers. Makes your own records, and your accountant's job, harder to untangle later.
- Lumping materials and labour into one number. A client is more likely to query a total they cannot see the shape of.
- Leaving off a due date. "Due on receipt" is not written anywhere unless you write it.
- Forgetting tax. Adding it after the fact, or not tracking what you charged, makes tax season a guessing game.
