Name the finish level
"Finished" means different things to a drywaller and a homeowner. The Gypsum Association's finish levels, 0 to 5, give you shared words: level 4 is the usual ready-for-flat-paint finish, and level 5 adds a skim coat for gloss paint or walls lit from the side. Put the level on the estimate. It is the difference between a satisfied client and a callback about visible seams.
Square feet of board, not floor
Price by the square footage of board hung (walls plus ceilings), not the floor area. Say whether you are counting openings or not, since some contractors deduct doors and windows and others don't.
Questions drywall contractors ask
How do you estimate a drywall job?
Measure wall and ceiling area, add 10 to 15 percent for waste, then price hanging, finishing to the stated level, texture, and debris removal.
What finish level should a drywall estimate include?
Level 4 is the usual choice for walls getting flat or eggshell paint. Offer level 5 as an option for gloss paint or strong side lighting.
